American Rock

America, the birth place of rock n roll!

After the initial rock giants faded, the american rock scene fell into decline. The void was initially filled by the British beat and r&b groups but through the 60′s America did produce some great bands, most of which are featured in this section.

One of my favourites of the late 60s early 70s was Creedence Clearwater Revival. They first came to my attention when I was listening to a countdown of 100 or whatever greatestr rock n roll songs on the radio when near the top they included Bad Moon Rising. I was knocked out so to speak. Over the next few years I managed to obtain a lot of thier material. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Around the mid 70′s Bob Dylan released an album called DESIRE. Although naturally by then I had heard of him I had never seriously listened to any of his material. A friend of mine had this album shortly after its release and I got to hear it. The first track HURRICANE literally blew me away and from that moment on I was hooked!

In an episode of Top of the Pops in 1971 there appearred a strange american gentleman by the name of Alice Cooper performing Schools Out. A terrific song and for three years or so I was a big fan as his single release were top quality. As time moved on so did I and poor Alice was forgotten. In the last decade I’e rediscovered the man and his evoling sound.

Dr Hook now there was a group with a mixed image! I first heard of them through the single Sylvia’s Mother but then extended that interest through a CBS compilation album that contained another track from that period. Interest in the group then waned somewhat but late on in the 70′s they re-emerged with a new sound, albeit covers of early 60s hits. Mainstream popularity then followed.

I’ve always been a fan of the music of the 60′s and one day I heard a fantastic cover version of Little Eva’s Locomotion. When the announcer said it was a band called Grand Funk I went out and got the album that contained the song. I was knocked out as they say by Shine On. However it took me several years to obtain anything else by this band.
